The Tamar Valley Male Voice Choir enters its second year.
It seems remarkable to think that the Tamar Valley Male Voice Choir is already one year old. It celebrated its first anniversary at the beginning of May by singing at Launceston Methodist Church as part of the Cornwall International Male Voice Festival and with a small party at its ‘headquarters' in Kelly Bray where Justin Leigh (the choir's Vice-President) helped Director of Music, Rosemary Cole, and Chairman, Charles Westlake, to cut the birthday cake. It may not be seen to be the done thing these days, but the choir is immensely proud of what it has achieved in its first year. It has grown from 11 members to 27, has presented 19 concerts (on both sides of the Tamar) and has appeared on both Radio Cornwall and Westcountry TV.
The choir commences its second year with its First Annual Gala Concert on June 9 th at 7.30pm in Callington Town Hall . TVMVC will be presenting some of the pieces they have learned during the year, along with new material, some arranged by Rosemary Cole especially for the concert. The evening will be compered by Justin Leigh. Guest artists are Jackie and Ivor Lander, the choir's guests at their very first full-scale concert, and the newly formed Firefly Barbershop Harmony Chorus from St Austell. The choir has recently been awarded an ‘Awards for All' Lottery grant which, together with grants from Caradon District Council and West Devon Borough Council, has enabled the purchase of an electronic piano and other equipment. This will have its first official outing at the Gala concert.
Celebrations continue on June 16 th when TVMVC perform in concert with Stithians Ladies Choir at 7.30pm at Saltash Wesley. With Radio Cornwall's Janette Eathorne acting as compere and Phil Taylor guesting on the organ, this promises to be an evening with something for everyone.
